Camels Head fire station is to be given a multi-million pound makeover.
The building, which is more than 50 years old, will undergo an extensive programme of refurbishment and modernisation under the £2.6m plan.
The proposals – which were approved by city council planners in January – will increase the station’s operational effectiveness, reduce running costs and reduce the building’s carbon footprint.
The project will deliver significant remodelling of the existing building layout to improve operational efficiency as well as modernising the overall appearance of the fire station. This will include new classing, insulation and windows, as well as improved heating and electrical systems.
Internal finishes will be updated with replacement of floor coverings, suspended ceilings and redecoration.
Operational functionality will be maintained throughout the duration of the project by phasing of the works and re-provision of the accommodation within the site as works progress to ensure that the station will continue to function as normal.
The final design is the output of many months of close working between the Devon & Somerset Fire Service Estates team, professional designers and the Camels Head station crews to ensure that the final building
will provide an effective operational service and efficient use of resources in line with the organisation’s fire and rescue plan.
