A new independent coffee bar is opening at Royal William Yard this weekend and behind it is a 21-year-old entrepreneur launching her very first business.
DockSide Coffee Bar opens on Saturday 20 December, bringing a cosy new waterside spot to Arcade, the independent retail hub inside the Grade I listed Brewhouse building.

Despite her age, Millie has seven years of experience in hospitality, having worked in the industry since she was 13. Now, she’s channelled that knowledge into building something entirely her own — from the look and feel of the space to the coffee served in every cup.
From hospitality roots to a Plymouth waterfront business
Originally from the Midlands, Millie moved to Devon two years ago to work in a hotel and quickly fell in love with the South West. While working in a local pub, she saw how a welcoming venue could become the heart of a community with regulars becoming familiar faces, and familiar faces becoming friends.
That experience stayed with her.
When the opportunity came up at Royal William Yard’s Arcade, Millie knew it was the right moment to take the leap.
A cosy new retreat by the water
Step inside DockSide Coffee Bar and Millie’s vision is clear. The interior blends rustic warmth with subtle seaside character, with layered wood tones, soft lighting and blue accents inspired by the waterfront. Plants soften the industrial heritage of the building, creating a calm, welcoming atmosphere.
The space seats 18–20 people, with a thoughtful mix of seating including tables for two, a large communal round table, high tables with stools and leather armchairs tucked into a cosy corner. Outdoor seating is planned for the future.
DockSide is dog-friendly, with bowls and blankets available, and local residents receive a 10% discount. Everything on the menu is also available to take away.
Quality coffee and local suppliers
Millie has partnered with The Coffee Company in Newton Abbot, a family-run business supplying both equipment and beans. DockSide serves their Monsoon blend, sourced from a Brazilian rainforest where beans are left outdoors to absorb rainfall which is a natural process that enhances flavour and aroma for a smooth, distinctive coffee.
Cakes are supplied by Buns and Crumbs in Kingsbridge and Salcombe.

Supporting independent businesses at Arcade
DockSide Coffee Bar becomes the third business to open at Arcade, joining Nala’s Pet Co. and Pebble womenswear boutique, as Royal William Yard continues to grow its independent retail and hospitality offering.
Arcade offers flexible monthly licences and longer-term leases of up to six years, with units ranging from 492 to 1,303 square feet, allowing new businesses to set up and open quickly.
