British Art Show 9 is a landmark touring exhibition that celebrates the vitality of recent art made in Britain.
British Art Show 9 will be delivered in partnership with Plymouth Culture and shown across four venues: The Box, KARST, The Levinsky Gallery at the University of Plymouth and MIRROR at Arts University Plymouth. It opens on October 8 and continues until December 23.
Organised every five years by Hayward Gallery Touring the exhibition brings the work of artists defining new directions in contemporary art to four cities across the UK, the final destination of the national tour being Plymouth.
Plymouth first hosted this significant national exhibition ten years ago. This iteration brings different themes into focus in each city. In Plymouth, it centres on the migration of people, plants, objects, ideas and forms. Work by British artists produced
between 2015 and 2022 will be featured, a period that began with Britain voting to leave the European Union and closed with the still unfolding Covid-19 pandemic.
British Art Show is the largest touring exhibition of contemporary art in the UK, giving people in cities across the country the opportunity to engage with work by 37 of the most exciting artists in Britain. Their works include film, photography, multimedia, painting, sculpture and performance.
The exhibition is curated by internationally respected curators Irene Aristizábal and Hammad Nasar and is produced by Hayward Gallery Touring, in collaboration with curators at each of the host cities.
British Art Show 9 also includes a programme of artist films and a dedicated website which enables artists to share works online. A programme of events and talks for people of all ages will take place in Plymouth, while outreach and Ambassador programmes will create further opportunities for people to engage with the exhibition and its themes.
