Creativity recognised with prestigious awards (P.20)
Two women well-known in Plympton for their respective businesses are ending the year on a high note after being named winners in the 2025 West Country Women’s Awards staged recently at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Plymouth.
Emma Drummond, founder of EM-MAgination Craft, has been named Small Business of the Year while Ellie Johnson, aka Mrs Murals, won the The Women in Arts, Media & Culture Award.
Plympton Academy’s Gold standard (P.18)
Pupils and staff at Plympton Academy are celebrating after receiving the prestigious Gold Artsmark Award – a national accreditation to recognise its commitment to the arts.
To achieve their Artsmark Award, Plympton Academy, based on Moorland Rd, had to develop their arts and cultural provision to embed a broad and ambitious curriculum.
This was achieved by creating an overall plan that was committed to and delivered across the whole school.
Popular running club offers new members chance to get fit, make friends and enjoy social events (P.8)
A popular Plympton running club formed more than 40 years ago is keen to welcome new members of all ages and abilities.
Instinctive Sports Running Club meets on Tuesdays at Hele’s School, Plympton at 7pm.
Instinctive Sports was formed in 1984, by a group of people who were interested in running and keeping fit and had started to meet informally on a regular basis.
Miles of meaning: Men’s Day Out is back for 2026! (P.13)
Men from across the community are being encouraged to put their best foot forward and sign up for a charity walk that’s renowned for its buzz, banter and brotherhood.
So much more than just a walk, iconic Men’s Day Out in aid of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth returns on Saturday March 14, giving men of all ages the chance to stride side by side, share stories and take positive steps to support one another while raising funds for a cause close to their hearts.
NEW YEAR HONOUR FOR CHESTNUT APPEAL BOSS (P.10)
Lesley-Ann Simpson, the chief exeutive of the Derriford Hospital-based Chestnut Appeal, has been awarded The British Empire Medal for services to men’s health in the New Year Honours List.
The Chestnut Appeal is a men’s health charity dealing with prostate cancer and it offers a range of services as well as funding eight specialist nurses.
Why paramedic Jess swapped emergency sirens for hospice calm (P.16)
An ambulance paramedic isn’t the kind of health professional normally encountered at a hospice, but Jess Timbrell is delighted to be using her skills to enrich her role with the compassionate nursing team at St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth’s specialist unit.
Life as a paramedic was fast-paced, stressful and involved critical decisions every single day for Jess Timbrell. After several years of training and hands-on service on the road, she was both confident and qualified to respond in emergencies and make split-second choices to save people’s lives. But something was missing.
Plymouth Boat Fest to return in June (P.14)
Organisers of the South West’s major boat show have announced it will return in 2026 after a successful inaugural event last year.
Plymouth Boat Fest 2025 attracted over 50 exhibiting companies and 30 vessels, ranging from marine technology to leisure, services, conservation and more. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday June 20 hosted at Plymouth Yacht Haven.
