A father and son from Plympton reached the recent finals of the 13th Cornish National Smite Championships staged at Calstock.
Colin and Ben Lees have been entering the annual tournament for a number of years but this year, for the first time, they progressed beyond the group stages, to reach the finals where they found themselves up against reigning World Smite Doubles Champions Matt Newing from Camborne and Dan Cole from Dobwalls.
Unfortunately, despite excelling in the earlier rounds, they found themselves no match for the reigning world champs who won 2-0 to become the first doubles pairing ever to hold both the World Doubles and Cornish National titles simultaneously.
3Earlier in the afternoon the champions had defeated another Plympton pairing, mother and daughter Deborah and Savannah Vertessy, 2-0 in the quarter finals.
Smite is a game similar to lawn skittles. The Cornish Nationals are held in Calstock on the second May Bank Holiday Monday every year and the World Championships take place in St Neot on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday weekend.
A total of 72 players took part in the tournament on May 28, raising £100 for the RNLI. More details about Smite and the game’s championships can be found at www.facebook.com/originalsmite
