A newly qualified hairdresser and barber from Plympton has started her dream career by taking up a position at a local salon in the town.
Lisa Newton is the newest member of staff at the Wow Hair and Beauty Salon in Seymour Road opposite Hele’s School.
Lisa, who lives in Plympton, was educated at Notre Dame in Plymouth before studying Level 2 hairdressing and Level 2 barbering.
After gaining her Level 2’s she went on to study Level 3 in both hairdressing and barbering which she successfully completed earlier this month and a day later she joined Wow Hair and Beauty.
Lisa said:
“My cousin used to work for Achievement Training and she had always encouraged me to go into hair and beauty because it was something I was always naturally interested in and seemed to have a knack for.”
Lisa identified that a lot more attention is paid to male grooming nowadays and this is one of the reasons she choose to add barbering to her qualifications.
“Men are getting a lot more into their looks these days, so it’s something I’m really passionate about and really enjoy doing,” said Lisa.

Her training has included hair tattoos which involves shaving patterns into the hair during cuts, but she is equally at home doing basic cuts and shaves as well as ladies styling and hair treatments.
Lisa is now looking forward to acquiring new clients and has a number of opening offers until the end of July. These include a 20% discount on the salon’s already competitive prices for hair treatments, 10% off for students and reduced prices for senior citizens on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Other offers include a ‘two for £15’ for father and son cuts or two boys such as brothers coming in together.
Asked about what particularly attracted her to take up a position at Wow Hair and Beauty Lisa indicated that the cleanliness of the salon, friendliness of existing staff and the salon’s focus on customer care, especially with elderly clients, were determining factors.
With this year’s school leavers about to finish their exams Lisa said she recommends hairdressing as a career for those who have a passion for it.
“It’s not just for girls, it’s for boys as well. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, especially if they feel it’s something they’re interested in. You don’t feel like you’re working when you’re enjoying your job,” she added.
