Plympton Academy has unveiled plans for a new building to replace the current one on its Moorland Road site.
The plans were revealed in a public consultation display in the main hall at the Academy recently.
Financing for the project has been secured from the Education and Skills Funding Agency and BAM will deliver the project subject to planning consent.
The Academy hopes the new building will provide students with first class facilities that will inspire them to be first class citizens.
The new building will offer a combination of bespoke classrooms along with art and design areas, food technology rooms, large hall and gym areas as well as an airy, bright learning resource centre that will be crammed with books and magazines that will encourage the Academy’s learners to read about different subjects.
Subject to gaining planning consent, the Academy is aiming for work to start in January 2019 and to be completed by September 2020.
Plympton Academy Principal Lisa Boorman said:
“Throughout the build the priority will be to ensure that there is minimal disruption to the learning of our students and I am confident that, through a joined up approach with BAM, that this will be achieved.”
A number of temporary classrooms will be brought onto the site during the rebuild.
The existing building adjacent to Moorland Road will be completely demolished and replaced with a more modern three-storey one set further back from the road.
There will be provision for a student congregation area in front of the new building where students can muster as they arrive for the start of the day.
A formal planning application is expected to be submitted to Plymouth City Council before the end of August.
