A Plymouth family barbers is celebrating 50 years in business.
Rogers Barber Shop was founded by Roger Barnes in 1971, initially operating from premises in the Barbican.
Six years later Roger moved to premises in How Street – right in the heart of the city centre – and the business has traded there for the last 44 years. It has seen many changes in the area over the years and now stands opposite the entrance to the Barcode car park.
Roger retired 12 years ago, although he remains as a director. His son Damian joined the business 23 years ago and is now manager of the shop and also a director. He leads a four-strong team of barbers.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the business Damian and Roger organised a special event on September 4, inviting customers, friends and family to join them in celebrating the success.
Damian, who trained at City College, said:
“We’ve had a testing few years recently with a seemingly relentless increase in the number of barbers in Plymouth, the demolition of the old Bretonside Bus Station and construction across the road of the Barcode cinema complex and, within five months of that building programme being completed, the onset of COVID.
“However, the great news is that we have survived and the celebration event was a great testimony to dad’s achievements and a really positive marker for the next decade or so!”
Damian, who is 43 and lives in St Judes, added:
“It was particularly tough during the construction of the Barcode as access to our shop was made really difficult – even finding a way through on foot was very difficult at times.”
He added that they still had customers who had been regulars since his father first set up the business.
“Sadly there are not many of them left, but it is a fantastic show of loyalty to dad and the business.”
