The children and staff at Plympton’s Kiddi Caru day nursery ventured into the deep dark wood to celebrate one of their favourite books – The Gruffalo – for the company’s 2018 book week initiative.
Written by Julia Donaldson and first published in 1999, The Gruffalo tells the tale of a mouse taking a walk through a forest where he meets a fox, an owl, a snake and finally the Gruffalo.
During the week-long celebrations the children went on Gruffalo hunts, made Gruffalo masks, biscuits and shoes and made snake necklaces with pasta.
They read The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child using story sacks and there were forest inspired sensory trays for them to explore. They even made a giant Gruffalo and a log pile house for him.
Tracey Callan, nursery manager, said:
“The Gruffalo is one of the children’s favourite books. As well as the Gruffalo himself they love the mouse character, who manages to make it out of the forest despite meeting a few scary animals along the way thanks to his quick thinking.
The story really captures the children’s imaginations and it was lovely to have a whole week dedicated to bringing it to life for them.”
