Plymouth Gladiators secured a thrilling 47 to 43 victory over the Poole Pirates at the Plymouth Coliseum on Saturday evening (09-08 2025), clinching the win in the final heat of the match.
The Pirates held a 33 to 27 lead after ten heats, but the Plymouth Gladiators mounted a dramatic comeback, winning key races in Heats 12, 14 and the decisive Heat 15 to seal the victory.
The atmosphere at the Coliseum was electric as the home crowd witnessed an intense contest full of fast-paced action and dramatic moments, including two crashes during Heats 3 and 12.
The Gladiators’ captain, Ben Barker, was the standout performer, scoring 18 points despite racing with a dislocated shoulder sustained in a crash during an away match against Poole just three days earlier.
Barker’s determination and skill were widely praised as he led his team to this important win.

The Coliseum, located on Coypool Road, can hold around 2,000 spectators and is the home venue for the Gladiators.
Plymouth’s speedway history dates back to the 1930s with earlier teams including the Tigers and Panthers. The modern Gladiators team was established in 2019.
For those unfamiliar with the sport, speedway is a form of motorcycle racing held over short, four-lap heats on an oval track covered in loose shale.
Riders compete on powerful bikes with no brakes and a single gear, sliding through the corners at speeds of up to 80 mph. Each meeting features 15 heats in one evening.
Riders earn points in each heat — three for first place, two for second, one for third, and none for fourth. The team with the most points at the end of all heats wins the match, making every heat vital.
The club’s community outreach and family-friendly events have helped broaden its appeal beyond traditional speedway followers. Social media activity and media coverage have also boosted the team’s profile, bringing more attention to the fast-paced, thrilling nature of the sport. Supporters say they appreciate the excitement and accessibility of speedway racing on their doorstep, and the Gladiators are keen to build on this momentum to grow the sport further across the Devon and Cornwall region.
This victory keeps Plymouth in contention for a play-off spot in the SGB Championship.
The next meeting takes place on Saturday 16th August at the Plymouth Coliseum. Gates open at 5:00pm, with racing starting at 7:00pm.
