Cann Bridge School in Plymouth has officially opened a brand-new communication, language and literacy library, giving children and young people with severe learning difficulties a space designed to make reading fun, inclusive and accessible for all.
The transformation from a small cupboard into a vibrant, fully equipped library was made possible by volunteer fundraiser Wendy Fisher, who raised more than £16,000 through charitable trusts and donations.
A library designed for every learner
The new facility features bespoke furniture and a wide range of specialist reading resources, including:
- Multi-sensory story boxes that bring books to life
- Story sacks and Makaton-supported texts to aid communication
- Symbolised stories and low-level readers for accessibility at all levels
- Carefully curated fiction and non-fiction for different ages and abilities
Nearly £5,000 was invested in new resources, with every classroom now stocked with high-quality materials to encourage a love of reading both at school and at home.
Community support makes it possible
The project also received support from the Friends of Cann Bridge and donors, including a Random Act of Kindness. Local business T.J. Purdy Ltd worked with the school on the design, while multi-sensory lighting panels were installed to create a stimulating and immersive environment.
Headteacher Shane Baker said:
“At Cann Bridge, we are passionate about creating opportunities for every learner to communicate, interact, and thrive. Our pupils face a wide range of challenges, and this library has been carefully designed to meet their individual needs – whether that’s through symbol-supported texts, sensory story boxes, or accessible books at every level.
“This is so much more than a library; it’s a small but impactful space where imaginations can grow, where communication comes alive, and where every child and young person has the chance to experience the joy of stories.”

Looking ahead
Cann Bridge School is already planning further initiatives, including:
- Enhancing outdoor classrooms and playgrounds to support sensory, social and physical development
- Launching Radio Cann Bridge, a mobile radio station building on the success of the pupil-led DJ Club, with a fundraising target of £7,250
