The staff at Kiddi Caru’s Plympton day nursery have been busy helping to prepare its pre-school children and their parents for the exciting move to primary school.

As part of the nursery’s school readiness programme, the staff have been liaising with primary schools in the area to ensure that the children have the confidence to take primary school in their stride. Teachers from the schools have visited the children at the nursery to introduce themselves and they have also provided photographs of their school for the children to look at and discuss.

As well as photos of the teachers, the children have been able to see what the classrooms, wash rooms, playground, dining hall and even coat pegs look like in their new school. This helps them to familiarise themselves with the new environment and allows them to know what to expect when they arrive for their first day. The nursery also held a graduation ceremony for its 39 school leavers, applauding their achievements at the nursery to give them a confidence boost.

Busy at pre-school

Tracey Callan, nursery manager, said:

“The idea of going to primary school can be quite daunting for the pre-schoolers and their parents. They are used to nursery life and the transition to school is a big step for them.

“Their days will be very different there, so our school readiness programme aims to give them an insight into what it will be like while they are still in the safe and secure nursery environment. This helps to reduce any anxiety by letting them know what to expect when they bid farewell to us.”
