Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the Friends of Devonport Park, this once overlooked part of Plymouth has flourished as an outside space that attracts crowds of people from all walks of life to enjoy its beauty, writes Karen Pilkington.
In September alone, there were events every weekend that brought music, sunshine and laughter to help us all ease into the routines of autumn, after the hazy days of summer.
The end of the school holidays was celebrated with some fantastic professional productions brought by Heartbreak productions all the way from Leamington Spa.
This was followed by the lively Parkfest which brought a really good line up of bands courtesy of Sky Mind Studios and Diverse Events. The weather was fantastic, there was plenty to see and do for young families, and the bands really got the audience up on their feet.
Bands included, The Ukabillies, One Night Stan’s, Tim Leay Acoustic, Horse With No Name-Plymouth and Firëbird. Aaron Monk who runs Diverse Events commented,
“Plymouth people have a very discerning 0101musical ear, so it’s really important for events to feature talented acts. The quality of sound that SkyMind deliver is excellent too, so the audience is treated to quality, even though the event is free to attend.”
The next weekend brought a change of pace and crowd but delivered a charming afternoon of Proms in the Park, organised by the Friends of Devonport Park. This was the finale to their summer events which have allowed them to continue to raise money for much needed improvements that enhance the park for everyone. The concert featured the wonderful Calstock Rubber Band who jolted many memories with a repertoire of older songs. This was followed by the Royal Naval Volunteer Band, along with the Devonport Park Community Choir who launched into Land of Hope and Glory in true ‘Prommers’ flag waving fun.
Morag Thomson Findlay, a singing teacher for the Millbay Music hub stole the show with her rendition of Rule Britannia, accompanied by professional jazz pianist Peter Hutchison.
Both events had a host of stalls including candy floss, Cancer Research, Hook a Duck, Sand Art and ice cream, and the mandatory inflatables to amuse the kids.
Outdoor events are always vulnerable to the weather, and to our calendar clashes and generally busy lives. However the efforts of the organisers to ensure as much entertainment as possible is on hand, as well all their other health and safety and logistical issues to overcome, are much appreciated by everyone who believes that communities are better when we are given the opportunity to get outside and play together.
