The South West’s premier festival of discovery, FUTURES, is set to return this Autumn, offering a unique opportunity to explore the groundbreaking research taking place across the region.
Running since 2018, this year’s FUTURES festival will feature over 20 free events across Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, and online, from September 19th to October 5th.
Funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the festival began in 2018 and is a collaboration between the University of Bath, Bath Spa University, University of Bristol, University of Exeter and University of Plymouth.
As a hub for outstanding research and innovation, the work that is taking place in the South West is helping address some of society’s big challenges and making lives better.
The festival allows the public to discover and celebrate the groundbreaking projects at the local universities helping to shape the future.
Research is all about asking questions, getting creative and testing things out, so you can be a researcher too!
Exeter:
Pop Up Curiosity Shop of Science and Culture – Saturday & Sunday, 28th & 29th September:
Located in Exeter’s Princesshay Shopping Centre, this lively event brings together scientists, artists, musicians, and more for a celebration of discovery. Visitors can enjoy demonstrations, talks, workshops, and performances, all designed to engage curious minds of all ages.
Totnes:
Gardening and Climate Change – Friday, 27th September:
Join Frances Tophill from Gardeners’ World and leading researchers at St Mary’s Church, Totnes, for a discussion on the role of horticulture in addressing climate change. This event will explore sustainable gardening practices and the importance of green spaces for biodiversity and urban resilience.
Plymouth:
The Big Talk: Harnessing the Ocean’s Energy – Thursday, 19th September:
Professor Deborah Greaves OBE FREng, a leading expert in offshore renewable energy, will deliver a public lecture at the University of Plymouth on the future of eco-friendly ocean power. Attendees will learn about the latest advances in harnessing the ocean’s energy and Plymouth’s role in this critical area of research.
Voyage of Discovery – Saturday, 5th October:
This interactive showcase at the historic Melville Building, Royal William Yard, will feature hands-on activities, demonstrations, and exhibits exploring science, technology, and art. The event is designed for all ages, offering a fun and educational day out for the whole family.
Online/At-Home Activities:
FUTURES 2024 also offers a range of online activities, allowing participants to engage with cutting-edge research from the comfort of their own homes. Highlights include:
