The Janh Mi is a love letter to Ho Chi Minh City’s famous sandwich: the Bahn Mi says Hutong Bagel Co
Anyone who has been to the Royal William Yard has passed the Hutong Bagel Co. Nestled beside the arched entrance to the Yard. The Hutong Co has been serving customers baked goods and coffee since 2017 and expanded to serving food at the Plymouth Train Station before it’s unfortunate closure earlier this year.

The business shifted towards focusing on Bagels and take away after the pandemic which worked well for them, with customers ‘queuing around the corner’ for the Hutong Co’s freshly baked goods and coffee. The cafe itself has only a couple tables so customers are expected to enjoy the scenery, which isn’t difficult due to the stunning waterside location.
There have been many different kinds of limited run bagels by Hutong in the past, from chicken katsu to Philly cheese steak, showing the versatility of the humble new york staple which has earned them 4.8 out 5 on Google Reviews as of writing this article. One customer said:
“I would give them 100 stars if I could! Absolutely amazing place for people to grab a cup of coffee and a bagel, sit under the sunshine and enjoy your breakfast food is amazing with good portions, probably the best bagel I’ve had, the staff are very friendly and helpful too!”
The latest limited run bagel is the Janh Mi, a playful take on the combined colloquial term for Plymothian ‘Janner’ and the Banh Mi baguette from vietnam.
“Inspired by our travels to Vietnam, we’ve subbed out the baguette for one of our now-famous handmade bagels and used Plymouth institution Ede’s vinegar to pickle a host of interesting vegetables to add crunch and spark to the roasted pork, sourced from Allison’s in Elburton.”
“It’s served all day from 7:30am until 2:30pm until close of play on Sunday 28th July, and it’s been rather humbling to see us queued out the door from the get go!”
