Ten acres of mixed woodland in the heart of Compton is providing home to various forms of flora and fauna and attracting a wide selection of wildlife.
Tulgey Woods was purchased by husband and wife Sid and Sam Remmer to preserve the wildlife and protect the land from development. The woodland and brush are an important ecological asset for the area.
They have established Tulgey Woods Sanctuary Community Interest Company and over the past six years have worked hard worked hard in stabilising the woods, clearing litter,creating coppiced glades, planting wildlife enhancing plants, reducing fires and vandalism, beating the bracken, placing nest boxes and building brash piles.
All of this was made possible with the help of like minded volunteers.
One of the volunteers who has been helping out recently is Charlotte Carlyle, who is standing as a councillor for Compton Ward in the May elections.
Charlotte helped tackle brambles and found out why a fence had been erected around the ‘secret woods.’ She said:
“Sadly, due to many incidents of anti-social behaviour including fly-tipping, criminal damage and harm to wildlife, they have taken the decision to install a wildlife friendly fence around the woodland.
“The fence will provide security for our wildlife whilst still allowing small spaces for badgers and foxes to travel to and from the site.”
She added:

Donations for the project are always welcome – £25 will buy a small nest box for the site or £15 a pair of gloves for a volunteer.
