Local Artist Kevin Preston has been hard at work painting the finishing touches on the fishing boat St Annes which is due to be moored outside the Three Crowns on the barbican in time for summer.
The extensive mural depicts the plymouth sound with many local landmarks lovingly rendered by Kevin Preston, a Military Veteran turned painter. Kev has shared his latest photos of the mural with the signwriting of the boat’s name and a cheeky crab with the words:
“you’re going to need a bigger boat.”

Kev explained the interesting use silicone based paint as his medium to ensure the mural could withstand the sea and elements in our last interview and how the inclement weather made it one of his most challenging pieces yet.
Kev said:
“We had a few really bad days, The worst was when it was raining, but the rain doesn’t affect the paint because it’s silicone based.”
The mural is another addition to the growing murals around Plymouth in an attempt By Plymouth City Council and local organisations to beautify the city and deter graffiti. Local Artist “Mrs Murals” alongside artists such as “Spray Saint” have both contributed murals to the city.

The boat is currently being looked over by an engineer before it gets moored on the barbican. The boat itself is a 1960s fishing vessel which is owned by local businessman Neal Stoneman who also commissioned the mural.
Neal explains about his first job as a child was on a fishing boat catching crabs and lobsters. His hope is that he can return to crabbing on this vessel during his retirement and put the newly purchased hauling gear to good use.
Neal hopes boat mural will promote Plymouth and the hospitality industry while also advertising St Anne’s House, which Neal owns and is available as a venue or holiday booking.
The boat is currently situated at Plymouth Boatyard & Marina but will be moored outside the Three Crowns on the Barbican in time for summer.
