The Mainstone Golf Society, an arm of the long-standing Mainstone Community Association Sports & Social Club, has concluded its operations with a notable donation to Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).
A recent fundraising golf day, coupled with the generous transfer of all remaining funds as The Mainstone Golf Society winds down, has resulted in a contribution of £3,650 to the charity.
The golf day, held at Boringdon Park Golf Club, saw over 100 individuals participate in 18 holes of the course. While the golf society itself is ceasing its activities, it is understood that the Mainstone Sports and Social Club, to which it was affiliated, remains a vibrant community hub.
The Mainstone Community Association and Sports & Social Club has a history in Plymouth stretching back to 1975, when it was formed as the Mainstone Play Group and Community Association. Over the decades, through fundraising and grants, it developed into the established social club it is today, serving the local Mainstone community with various facilities and activities.
Children’s Hospice South West operates three facilities across the region, including Little Harbour in St Austell, the local hospice for families in the Plymouth area. These hospices collectively support more than 500 babies, children, and young people living with life-limiting conditions.
Annabel Roberts, Area Fundraiser for CHSW, expressed gratitude for the donation. “Every penny of this donation is incredibly appreciated,” she stated, noting that the annual running cost for Little Harbour alone is approximately £4 million.
Ms. Roberts acknowledged the society’s decision to wind down, while highlighting the continued activity and welcoming nature of the wider Sports and Social Club.
CHSW, established in 1991, provides a range of services from short breaks and specialist play to palliative and end-of-life care.
The charity relies almost entirely on voluntary contributions to fund its operations across its three sites, which entail an annual running cost of around £14 million.
