
BD Plymouth, a major employer in the city for over 45 years, has been hailed as a ‘success story’ for Plymouth’s economy by MP Luke Pollard.
During a recent visit to the state-of-the-art BD plant in Plymouth, Luke Pollard MP praised the facility for its contributions to the local community and its role in strengthening the national economy.
MP Luke Pollard said:
“BD Plymouth makes world-class health care products that are sold, and used, globally strengthening both our local economy and adding to our national economy. BD’s story is a Plymouth success story that I am proud to back.”
The state-of-the-art plant operates around the clock, producing medical devices that are used globally. Among its products are BD Vacutainer® blood collection tubes, which are integral to healthcare systems worldwide.
Key facts about the facility include:
- A 100,000 m² facility operating 24/7.
- Nearly 800 employees, including 185 technical and engineering professionals, with a third being women.
- Over 3.1 billion medical devices produced annually, including 2.7 billion BD Vacutainer® blood collection tubes.
- Contributions of £59 million annually to the national economy, with £14 million directly benefiting Plymouth.
Beyond manufacturing, BD Plymouth’s commitment to the community is evident through partnerships with 25 schools, colleges, and universities across the UK. These collaborations aim to inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists, ensuring a skilled workforce for the future. Currently employing nearly 800 people including 185 technical and engineering professionals, the plant is a significant source of local employment, with a growing focus on inclusivity in technical and engineering roles.
