Sherford Community Church is live following its first Sunday service in September. The church now meets weekly at 10am on Sundays at Sherford Vale Primary School.
The launch service was a happy event which brought together local residents and supporters from outside the new development, and saw young and old worshipping together.
The congregation sang simple songs and prayed together, but the central point of the service was the time looking in the Bible.
“does Jesus actually live up to the hype?”
The focus for the service was on the first few lines of Mark’s Gospel which features one of the eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ life.
Church Minister Revd Tom Brassil said:
“We saw how he was preceded by centuries of ‘hype’. In fact, Mark said that his book was, ‘the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.’
“We left with this question to puzzle over: does Jesus actually live up to the hype? Hopefully the answer will become clearer as we continue to look in the Bible together in the coming weeks and months! If you want to find out more about why Mark thinks Jesus is good news, why not come along?”
The launch service also featured a special guest appearance by the Right Reverend Nick McKinnel, Bishop of Plymouth. He was delighted to see a new church starting, having worked hard himself behind the scenes to make it happen, and he finished the service by praying a prayer of blessing for the church and for Sherford.
Revd Brassil said
“I was equally thrilled to see the coming together of plans that have been laid over months and years. Our ‘tag-line’ as a church is ‘Building a church; creating a community; bringing people together,’ and my hope for the church is that we can live this out.
“I very much hope that Sherford Community Church can be a place where Christians can worship God and deepen their faith together, but you don’t have to be a Christian to be part of the church.
“My other great wish for the church is that we can be a safe place for people to explore faith, to ask questions about God and to find a new hope for life as they encounter the person of Jesus for the first time. We also want to be a welcoming community where anyone can find new friends.”
In addition to the weekly Sunday service, the church also runs a Baby and Toddler Group every Wednesday during school term time from 10am to 11.15am in the Upper Hall, St Matthew’s Church, Sherford Road, PL9 8DQ. It provides stay-and-play sessions for parents, carers and their children aged up to three years old. Cost is £1 per family per week.
