For nearly a century, a local brass band has been a cherished part of Plymouth’s musical heritage. This year marks a significant chapter in their history as the band rebrands itself from Soundhouse Brass to Plymouth City Brass to reflect its deep ties to the city & commitment to the community.
The decision to change the name to Plymouth City Brass was driven by the band’s dedication to Plymouth, where its 75 members are active participants in the city’s cultural scene.

The rebranding represents more than just a name change, it stands as a tribute to the band’s rich history and its continuous contributions to Plymouth’s cultural landscape.
To celebrate the rebrand, the brass band will host a free concert on September 21st at Plymouth Methodist Central Hall. This event is not only a celebration of their new name but also an opportunity for the community to experience the band’s vibrant musical talent firsthand.
The band traces its origins back to a group of musicians who broke away from the Salvation Army nearly 100 years ago, seeking more freedom to express themselves through music. Originally named The Plymouth City Mission Band, funded by a local charity, the band later became Plymouth Silver Band and then Crownhill Royal British Legion Band.
For the past two decades, the band has been known as Soundhouse Brass, named after the purpose-built music facility at Tor Bridge High where it had been based. Despite the changes in name, the band’s dedication to music and the community has remained steadfast.
“We are proud of our heritage and our long connection to the beautiful city of Plymouth. When performing locally, or competing nationally, the band wish to be instantly connected to our home city, and the name Plymouth City Brass does just that.”
Plymouth City Brass is structured into three sections:
- Plymouth City Training Brass: Open to anyone of any age and ability, offering free tuition and instrument rentals in a fun and safe environment.
- Plymouth City Academy Brass: Formed in 2019, this section bridges the gap between the training and senior bands, providing support to young musicians and performing at concerts and contests across the South West.
- Plymouth City Brass: 1st Section Senior Band who regularly compete in regional and national contests. Representing many walks of life
The band looks forward to continuing its tradition of musical excellence under its new name.
