Plymouth RNLI volunteers were launched on Sunday morning after an elderly man suffered a head injury following a fall at Millbrook Lake, near the water’s edge, where access by land was difficult.
The Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Annabel E Jones was tasked at 9.45am at the request of Falmouth Coastguard. Thanks to a high spring tide, the lifeboat crew were able to reach the casualty directly from the water and place two volunteer crew members ashore to assess his condition.
With the tide still allowing access, the casualty was carefully extracted by lifeboat and transferred a short distance along the shoreline to a pre-arranged rendezvous point. Tamar Coastguard Rescue Team and the South Western Ambulance Service were waiting to provide onward medical care.
Neil Humphrey, inshore lifeboat helm, said:
“We were able to successfully extract the injured gentleman, thanks in part to the accurate location provided using what3words, which was passed to the Coastguard, and the casualty making himself known as we approached the area.
We would also like to thank the South Western Ambulance Service and Tamar Coastguard Rescue Team for their assistance with the casualty’s onward care. We wish him a speedy recovery.”
