Pomphlett Primary School in Plymstock has once again received a ‘good’ rating from Ofsted.
Inspectors described the school as ‘a calm and orderly environment where pupils play and learn together well. Leaders and staff have high expectations for pupils learning and pupils are enthusiastic about their learning and take pride in their work.’
The report praised school leaders saying they had ‘built a curriculum that identifies the key concepts they want pupils to know and remember.’
Head teacher Claire Makelis said:
“The staff, children and governors are really pleased that the inspection recognised that Pomphlett continues to be a good school.
“We had our last inspection back in 2013 and the bar has been raised considerably for school inspections since then, so it is particularly gratifying that we have continued to maintain our high standards over this time.
“The inspector accurately recognised that our children are happy and safe, behave well, enjoy their time at school and make good progress. Our strengths are clearly shown in this report and the area for further improvement outlined will ensure we make even more progress as a school.”
The hard work of everyone shone through in the report which also praised the school saying that ‘Staff provide additional support to pupils who need help to recognise and manage their emotions and behaviour. Leaders have rightly prioritised training for staff to help them support pupils’ social and emotional needs.’
The report noted that ‘members of the local governing body use their knowledge and skills to support and challenge leaders in equal measure. Leaders from across the trust support staff wellbeing and that staff appreciate this support.’

An Ofsted inspector visited the school in April and spoke with pupils about their work and school life as well meeting with senior leaders and staff. Views from parents and carers were also considered as part of the inspection process.
When Ofsted have judged a school to be good, they will normally go into the school about once every four years to confirm that the school remains good.
This is called a Section 8 Inspection of a good school or non-exempt outstanding school. It was the first routine inspection the school has received since the COVID-19 pandemic began and the first Section 8 inspection since their previous inspection in 2013.
