PureGym marks its 15th anniversary with a significant milestone: the opening of its 400th gym in the UK, located in Plymouth Derriford.
Since its first gym opened in Leeds in 2009, PureGym has built a reputation for delivering low-cost, no-contract memberships while maintaining accessibility through 24/7 operations. The new Plymouth Derriford gym, situated in the Derriford District Centre, joins two existing PureGym locations in the city.

Puregym offers hundreds of pieces of equipment and over 50 weekly classes, the facility aims to cater to diverse fitness needs while also contributing to the local economy by creating nine new jobs. The gym’s location near popular retail outlets like M&S and Aldi shows greater investment in the North of Plymouth.
The Plymouth Derriford gym was opened by footballer Scott Corderoy and MP Fred Thomas.
Fred Thomas said in a comment on the opening of puregym:
“It’s fantastic to have another gym opening here in Derriford Retail Park, which we’re really proud of. This is a development in the north of the city, we need more of that. But I’m really happy to be here today, at the opening event. I want to see more people getting inside the gym, getting healthy.
It’s a huge part of how we improve health outcomes, how we improve mental health, and just improve our chances and break down the barriers to opportunity for everyone.”
By the end of 2024, the company will have opened 44 new gyms in the UK—a pace that sets it apart not only in the leisure sector but also among leading retailers operating in out-of-town locations.
The company has announced plans to add as many as 200 more locations in the coming years such as repurposing sites like those acquired through the Carpetright administration process, to meet the rising demand for affordable fitness facilities.
PureGym CEO Clive Chesser who was at the event for the opening of the 400th PureGym said in an interview:
“we’re really proud. This is number 400 for us in the UK. So this is a big opening for us. And this is also, a part of Plymouth that we’ve been really keen to get into for a number of years.
So it’s our third gym in Plymouth, but we’re, delighted to be here in Derriford. And it’s an ideal spot for for our landmark 400″
