A team of Royal Marines from 42 Commando will take to Plymouth city centre on friday in a test of endurance to raise funds for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.
On Friday 16 May, between 10am and 2pm, members of the 42 Commando Royal Marines Field Gun Team will be stationed on Armada Way as they aim to complete 100 kilometres of cycling and 66.4 kilometres of rowing — a combined total that pays tribute to the Royal Marines’ founding year of 1664.
The event is part of a wider fundraising effort in support of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC), which provides lifelong support to sailors, marines, veterans and their families. The charity plays a vital role in boosting morale and well-being, funding projects and delivering millions of pounds in support to service personnel and their loved ones.
The Plymouth-based team will also be competing later this year in the annual Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity Field Gun Competition, held at HMS Collingwood. The high-octane contest sees military units from across the services race to assemble and transport a traditional naval field gun in a series of drills that recreate historic wartime procedures.
Organisers hope Friday’s event will attract the support of the local community, with the public invited to cheer on the team, learn more about their work, and make donations to the RNRMC.
Plymouth, home to HMNB Devonport and steeped in naval heritage, remains a stronghold of support for Britain’s armed forces. The Field Gun Team say they are proud to represent the city and their Corps — and grateful for any show of encouragement on the day.
