A charity weekend festival to honour those affected by cancer will be marking its 10th anniversary with a Royal Naval parachute display team descending onto the venue on Saturday 27 July.
Cancer Research UK is encouraging family, friends and work colleagues in Plymouth and surrounding areas to get involved in Relay for Life taking place at Tor Bridge High Secondary School, in Miller Way, and help fund life-saving research.
Relay For Life celebrates the power of community fundraising in the fight to beat cancer. Teams of family and friends, of all ages, levels of fitness and walks of life are asked to raise vital funds through a wide range of activities.
Over £400,000 has been raised in the last decade of fundraising for the charity, helping families stay together for longer.
Jason Brockman, Volunteer Event Chair of Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life in Plymouth, is an experienced hand in fundraising, having been involved in the Liskeard committee and went on to lead the Plymouth event in 2016.
He said:
“Relay For Life marks its 10th anniversary in Plymouth next weekend and it is all about the power of community fundraising in the fight to beat cancer.
“We have Devonport Naval Base Commander, Brigadier Mike Tanner OBE RM, who himself is a cancer survivor, opening the event on Saturday, prior to the parachute team landing on the venue with a Relay flag then being handed to one of the cancer survivors and honouring everyone affected by cancer and to celebrate the progress we have made in research.”
The day starts at 12 noon on Saturday 27 July at Tor Bridge High School, Miller Way in Plymouth, where events unfold in what is set to be a spectacular weekend of entertainment, featuring soul singer Joanna Cooke, who supported Tom Jones and Jess Glynne on their recent tours; Devon singer and performer Donna Walker and rising star Tom Baker will perform as well as an array of entertainment for everyone, including an inflatable theme park and 16 teams of 5-aside football matches, striding out to kick cancers butt.
