The first Plymouth Market event ‘Sunset Market’ friday the 12th of July was a success. Seeing many customers enjoying the later closing time of the Plymouth Market, enjoying the diverse food and stalls until 7pm.
The popular Plymouth Market has been a mainstay of the Plymouth City Centre since 1959 where it stood as a venue for selling fresh produce and selling services such as tailoring and repairs. Stalwarts of that era remain with many stalls still offering produce and services.
Over the last decade it has felt like the Plymouth Market has been going through a transition, with many stalls being converted from the traditional market stalls to offer a diverse range of international foods and culinary experiences. The ‘Sunset Market’ gave those traders an opportunity to trade until 7pm after requests from the public to trade later into the evening, the Plymouth Market website said:
‘You asked, we delivered…’
‘Join us on Friday 12th July for our Sunset Market, where we are extending opening hours until 7:00pm. Enjoy authentic street food, unique shopping, and the community atmosphere for longer. It’s the perfect way to spend your summer Friday evening with friends and family.’
The evening was a success with traders reporting good footfall despite the greying weather, the Hedgerow Hound said:
“We had a fantastic time! It was such a great opportunity to showcase the wide array of evening dining options in the market. All the food stalls were full and people seemed to be really enjoying having it open a bit later for something different to do of an evening!”
“We can’t wait to do another, creating special dinner and cocktail menus for the event is something we get really excited about.”
The response from customers was overwhelmingly positive, including this message to KIKU Restaurant (below), KIKU has received feedback from customers hoping to continue the sunset market into the future. The KIKU team hope the Plymouth Market can follow suit with similar markets in London and provided examples of the Seven Dials Market & Vinegar Yard which remain open until 10pm.
Everest flavours are known as one and only Nepalese street food vendors in plymouth, when asked about the success of the sunset market they said:
“So for the first time Plymouth market was open till late and it was absolutely amazing we was really busy till the end. We had many guests who came from very far away just to visit the late market.
Everyone enjoyed the food and good vibes. And the whole market was really busy. So the late Fridays should be done again”
in a press release following the event, Plymouth City Market said:
