
The Plymouth clean technology company Altilium is helping to shape the future of electric vehicles after teaming up with car giant Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).
National Spotlight for Plymouth Innovation
Altilium, based in the city, has been working with JLR to test new ways of recycling old car batteries. The partnership was unveiled at Cenex Expo 2025, where the team showcased new EV battery cells made with recycled materials.
For Plymouth, the collaboration places the city on the map as a hub of innovation in the fast-growing green economy. Local leaders say the project highlights the role of regional businesses in tackling national and global challenges.
Cutting Waste, Creating Opportunity
The process behind the breakthrough is called EcoCathode™. It can recover more than 95% of valuable metals such as lithium, cobalt and nickel from used batteries which are resources that are normally imported through mining overseas.
By closing the loop and reusing what already exists, the UK can create a more secure supply of battery materials while reducing reliance on foreign imports. For drivers, that could mean more affordable electric cars in the long run.
Proven Environmental Benefits
Independent testing has also underlined the environmental case. A Life Cycle Assessment found that making new batteries with 100% recycled material could cut greenhouse gas emissions by 32% compared to traditional methods.
The same study showed improvements in water quality and air pollution, reinforcing the view that recycling is not only good for business but also for public health and the planet.
Plymouth at the Heart of Green Growth
Altilium already operates a pilot plant in Plymouth, where its recycling technology is being tested at scale. The company has also announced plans for a much larger facility in Teesside, which could supply a substantial share of the UK’s battery needs.
While most production will eventually take place in the North East, Plymouth is set to remain a key site for innovation and development. Local jobs and skills in clean technology are expected to grow as the project expands.
