Victoria Road Primary School in St Budeaux welcomed some very special guests in January – the African Children’s Choir.
The Choir was in Plymouth for a number of concerts and appearances, including a half time performance at the Plymouth Argyle vs Coventry City home game, which attracted a standing ovation from thousands of supporters.
“I can’t believe how fabulous they were, it brought a tear to my eye.”
Each class at Victoria Road studied a different country and made a traditional dish from their chosen place. During the day, children found out facts, made flags and art work, and produced a dish for the International banquet, which CaterEd chef Natasha Harris also took part in. Children found out about the similarities and differences in their cultures and even made some pen pal links.
All the staff and children came together at the end of the day for a singing festival. This opened with a slideshow of learning from the day and a song from the African Children’s Choir. All year groups sang a song of their choice and some songs were sang together.
Children from Victoria Road Primary School also went to see the Choir in concert at the China Fleet Country Club, where they also sang with the Choir. This experience was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants and helped raise over £200 to present to the Choir on the day.
Headteacher Kevin Duggan said:
“It was a lovely opportunity for the children and gave them real life experiences and opportunities to partake in something incredible.”
Mrs Yorke, a Year 3 teaching assistant was blown away by the performances:
“I can’t believe how fabulous they were, it brought a tear to my eye.”
Brooke, a student from the Year 3 class also added:
“I loved meeting the children in real life, they are amazing and talented children.”
