Local couple, Jess and Luke Mitchell bought their first home at Linden Homes’ Sherford development by using the Help to Buy scheme.

Luke, 29, is a postman and his wife Jess, 28, works at Ladybirds Day Nursery in Brixton. They moved to a new three bedroom house at Sherford in August, just after their wedding. Speaking about their experience, Luke said:

“We’d been renting a three bedroom house in Plymstock for two years and hadn’t even thought about buying our own home, it seemed like a long way off.

“One day we decided to have a look around Sherford, just to see how it was taking shape. We loved the homes, they were full of character but we assumed they’d be out of our price range. When we were admiring one house, Tom the sales executive said ‘this could be yours’ and it really made us think.

we own a bigger house than we rented, yet pay £200 less per month”

“We spoke to New Homes Mortgage Helpline and the sales team, who let us know that we could afford to move and then introduced us to the Help to Buy scheme. Our family helped us with the five per cent deposit and the rest happened very quickly. We find it amazing that we own a bigger house than we rented, yet pay £200 less per month – it’s unbelievable!”

Jess added:

“Ever since I was little I’ve had a dream home in my mind – a red brick house with a chimney, a red door and a front garden. As soon as I saw our house, I completely fell in love with it – and it even ticked every item from the list! It has a lovely cottagey-feel but it’s so big and gives us plenty of room to grow.

“We loved the look of older style properties but we didn’t have the time to do all the work involved and wanted that fresh finish. The homes at Sherford suited us perfectly so it really does feel like we have the best of both worlds.

“The staff at Linden Homes were excellent and provided us with lots of reassurance and held our hands throughout the process. When I heard that the sales team were looking for an extra pair of hands, I recommended my sister who’s in property and she now works there too!  We love the community spirit at Sherford, our neighbours are lovely and we feel very lucky to be part of it.”

Brian Deacon, sales and marketing director at Linden Homes, said:

“We’re absolutely delighted that local couple, Luke and Jess have been able to buy their first home at Sherford using Help to Buy.

“Sherford is such a community and it’s great to see the new town grow in size with more residents, homes and even the new school which is well on its way.”

Help to Buy also helped Chloe and Josh

Chloe Bradley and Josh Ackland

Chloe Bradley and Josh Ackland became the first residents on their street at Sherford at the end of November last year.

Since moving into their three bedroom home, the couple have been joined by several other families and are enjoying life in this ever growing community at Sherford.

Previously based in a rented flat in Plympton, Chloe and Josh were looking to upsize, but they never imagined that a three storey townhouse would be within their reach.

Chloe said:

“I can’t believe that we’ve gone from renting a flat to living in a three storey townhouse, we still look around and think is this our home? It didn’t feel real at first, we’d always liked the idea of a new build but we didn’t think we’d be able to get a home like this, it’s just incredible. ”

“There are so many gorgeous features to the property. We have the whole of the top floor as our bedroom and en-suite, and there are no box rooms – all the bedrooms are huge.

“One of my favourite spots is the lounge, it’s so warm because the sun beams in everyday. We never thought that this would be the kind of house that we’d go for but we absolutely love it. With such busy lifestyles, Josh is a chef and I’m a host manager at a local hotel, we’re always in and out so we wanted something that would be ready and waiting, and we’ve been lucky enough to get exactly that.

“I’m so grateful that we’ve been able to cut out all the fuss you get with an old house. In fact, we couldn’t believe how easy it was; we used Help to Buy and the sales executives were really helpful and told us to just pop in if we were unsure about something.

“Help to Buy wasn’t stressful, it was quite the opposite, and only needing a 5% deposit made our move possible. The whole process was much faster than expected; we came back from our holiday and the Sales Executives told us we could have the keys straight away.”

While enjoying life in their home, Josh and Chloe are excited about their future at Sherford, as Chloe added:

“For a young couple who want a family, Sherford is perfect because you can plan for the future.

“We can see the town developing and it’s brilliant to watch the school that our children will go to being built. It’s reassuring to know that we’ll have everything we need, I can honestly say that we could live here forever.”
