Thirteen contestants will line up on the evening of July 25 at Plymouth Guildhall to compete for the position as Plymouth’s Mayflower 400 Town Crier, dedicated to raising awareness of the Mayflower 400 year long programme of events and activities that will mark the 400 year anniversary of this historic voyage to America.
A panel of six judges including Judi Spiers and Lord Mayor of Plymouth Councillor Richard Ball will pick the winner in the style of Britain’s Got Talent and members of the public are invited to come along and join in the vote on the evening to help pick the best crier.
The Town Crier Competition, brought to life by 3 residents from The Hoe and funded by the
Mayflower 400 Community Sparks cultural programme, starts at 7pm with entry being free.
Plymouth Morris Dancers will entertain the audience outside the Guildhall from 6pm before the competition begins.
The entrants have been put through their paces in readiness for the evening by mentors, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge town criers Les Ellis and Roger Pinder. Les will also act as Master of ceremonies for the evening.
The winner will have no time to rest on their laurels as they will jump straight into the International Town Crier competition in Devon on Friday 26, Saturday 27, and Sunday 28 July.
Looking ahead: The exciting programme of Mayflower 400 events will get off to a brilliant start with the Illuminate Light Festival between 28 November – 1 December, and the year of activities will include everything from community events through to major exhibitions, performances and plays with the majority being free for people to attend and enjoy.
