When did you last take a stroll along Mutley Plain? Chances are you’ve spotted some changes.
Compton Councillors Andrea Johnson and Nick Kelly are on a mission to reverse the decline on the high street and make Mutley Plain a thriving district shopping centre once again.
Signs of Mutley’s rejuvenation are clear with more than half a dozen new businesses taking up occupancy along Mutley Plain in recent months.
Cllr Kelly said:
“It’s fantastic to see premises that have been boarded up for years coming back to life with new and independent traders investing in Mutley Plain”
The new businesses range from barbers to a yoga and pilates studio, a brunch café, children’s play café, a furniture outlet, a bigger Dominos pizza branch, health therapies, nail salons and Mutley Baptist Church will open its own ‘Green Space’ arts shop in July. The Plain is a bustling service centre and there really is something for everyone.
Cllr Mrs Johnson said
“The Mutley Steering Group have worked extremely hard to facilitate new businesses setting up in the area and we are starting to see the positive results of our efforts”
Both councillors know there is still much to do to realise their aspirations of Mutley Plain returning to full occupancy and the vibrancy it had many years ago.
Cllr Kelly said:
“We are working quietly behind the scenes to improve the public realm, offer much-improved parking arrangements and keep the Plain clean and tidy.

We are strongly advocating more and longer free parking for shoppers to enable them to really explore the wide diversity of shops and professional services that are available.
“We would like to see more flowers, trees and shrubs planted to improve the air quality and make the area more visually attractive. We’re also working on removing some of the clunky railings to open the space up a little more. ”
Further positive news is that the unsightly toilet block will soon be removed and the local Police have been extremely pro-active in moving beggars along from the shop fronts.
Both Councillors would welcome shoppers’ thoughts on how they would like to see Mutley Plain transformed in the future.
