A new community learning space aimed at supporting adults across Plymouth has officially opened, offering free courses designed to improve confidence, employment prospects and wellbeing.
On Course South West has launched the Plymouth Learning Hub, a dedicated centre intended to help residents, particularly those facing disadvantage access education in a welcoming local setting.
The Hub is being led by Samantha Welsford, who says the focus is on creating clear pathways for people who may feel unsure about their next step.
Located within the community it serves, the Learning Hub is designed to be more than a classroom space, acting instead as a supportive environment where learning is closely linked to real-life outcomes.
“Removing barriers to learning”
Lucinda Sanders, Principal of On Course South West, said the initiative reflects a wider commitment to strengthening the city through accessible adult education.
“The Plymouth Learning Hub is about more than just education; it is about building a stronger, more resilient city.
By removing barriers to learning and providing these free resources, we are giving our residents the tools they need to transform their own lives and contribute meaningfully to our community.”
Focus on confidence, wellbeing and work at the Learning Hub
Courses offered through the Plymouth Learning Hub are structured around four main areas:
- Employment – including practical qualifications and job-seeking support
- Wellbeing – supporting mental health, physical health and resilience
- Community engagement – helping people connect through volunteering and local activity
- Confidence – building communication skills and self-belief
- Organisers say the approach is designed to support people at different stages of life, whether they are returning to work, seeking social connection, or looking to improve their overall wellbeing.
