British Youth Music Theatre (BYMT) is bringing in-person auditions to Plymouth this January, offering young performers an exciting opportunity to take part in its 2026 season of new music theatre.
The UK’s leading commissioner of original music theatre will welcome performers aged 11–21 to audition locally, removing the need to travel out of the region. As a result, more young people can access professional theatre pathways closer to home.
Auditions will take place on Saturday 24 January 2026 at Plymouth College.

BYMT will run two audition sessions on the day:
- 10am–1pm
- 2pm–5pm
Participants must book a place in advance via the BYMT website. Importantly, the auditions are designed to be welcoming and inclusive.
Rather than formal auditions, BYMT delivers three-hour group workshops led by professional theatre practitioners. During the session, participants explore acting, singing and movement together.
No experience or preparation required
Unlike traditional auditions, BYMT does not require young people to prepare material beforehand. Instead, practitioners teach all material on the day.
BYMT looks for enthusiasm, creativity and collaboration. Therefore, previous performance experience is not essential. This approach allows young people to relax, engage and enjoy the process.
Meanwhile, participants gain first-hand experience of working in an ensemble, reflecting how professional theatre productions operate.
From local auditions to professional theatre stages
Successful auditionees will join BYMT’s 2026 Young Company. They will then take part in a two-week residential course during the Easter or Summer holidays.
Courses will run in Birmingham, Exeter, Manchester, Hull or London. During the project, young people collaborate with professional writers, composers, directors and choreographers.
As a result, they help create and premiere a brand-new musical, performed in a professional theatre at the end of the process.

A strong track record in the South West
BYMT has an established history of producing work in the South West. Most recently, the company staged Sense & Sensibility at The Barnfield Theatre, Exeter in 2025.
Previously, BYMT presented The Power of Camelot at Exeter Northcott Theatre in 2024. These productions demonstrate the organisation’s commitment to developing new work outside London.
Notably, BYMT alumni include Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Charlotte Ritchie and Bradley Jaden.

Audition fees and financial support
The standard audition fee is £45. However, BYMT offers a reduced rate of £30 for those in receipt of Pupil Premium.
In addition, BYMT provides bursaries and financial support for successful participants. The organisation works closely with families to ensure that finances do not become a barrier to participation.
