Plymouth Cafés Secure National Recognition

The popular Kawaffle destination within Plymouth Market

Plymouth has achieved a notable distinction in a recent study identifying the UK’s top cafés.

Plymouth is home to two establishments that feature in the top ten nationally on tripadvisor: Kawaffle, ranked fifth, and Tantuni, at seventh. This recognition is based on an analysis of customer reviews.

  • A new study reveals Britain’s favourite cafés based on Tripadvisor reviews, and Plymouth is the only city with two cafés in the top 10: Kawaffle in fifth and Tantuni in seventh.
  • Kawaffle has 286 reviews and a score of 4.989 out of 5, while Tantuni has 258 reviews and a score of 4.988.
  • Devine Restaurant Coffee Bar in London takes the top spot, with 1,409 reviews and a near-perfect score of 4.997.

The study evaluated over 14,000 cafés across 150 of the UK’s most populated cities. It synthesised review counts and ratings to generate a composite score reflecting customer favorability. Kawaffle achieved its ranking with 286 reviews and a score of 4.989 out of 5, while Tantuni recorded 258 reviews and a rating of 4.988

While Devine Restaurant Coffee Bar in London secured the top position, Plymouth stands out as the only city to have two cafés included within the top ten.

This acknowledgement of Kawaffle and Tantuni underscores the quality of Plymouth’s independent food scene. Both establishments, located within Plymouth Market, contribute to the city’s diverse culinary offerings.

Plymouth’s Hospitality Industry

Plymouth’s service industry, encompassing sectors such as hospitality and retail, plays a significant role in the local economy.

While human health and social work activities remain the largest source of employment, the visitor economy, which includes cafés, supported nearly 8,000 jobs in the city, representing just under 8% of Plymouth’s total employment in 2019 [1]. Recent data also suggests a 20% surge in city centre footfall over the past year [2], indicating a positive trend for businesses within the service sector.

This environment of increasing visitor numbers and economic activity provides a foundation for independent businesses like Kawaffle and Tantuni to thrive.

Notes: The study was conducted by Pens.com and was sent as part of a press release. The Tripadvisor search used for each city was for restaurants where the cuisine was of type: Cafe.
