The owner and staff of a Plympton hair and beauty salon are celebrating after receiving recognition at a national awards ceremony.
The Hair & Beauty Community Awards run by the National Hairdressers Federation and the National Beauty Federation (NHF/NBF) took place at a reception held at the Houses of Parliament in May.
The awards were launched in 2019 to recognise and promote the work hair salons, barbershops and beauty salons do to support their local communities.
Kelly Tolhurst, Minister for Small Business, Paul Uppal, the Small Business Commissioner, Mark Pawsey and many other MPs attended the Hair & Beauty Community Awards to learn more about the sector and their contribution to high streets.
The reception was also attended by hair and beauty business owners from across the country who were invited to attend as a result of entering and being shortlisted.
The firm reached the finals in recognition of their charity work. Throughout 2018 Skin Deep Hair raised money and held a charity ball for the charities Ava’s Fund and Pregnancy Crisis Care. In total they raised more than £14000 for these two charities.

“These charities are close to our hearts after they helped support one of our stylists, Kayley, and her partner Gareth when they delivered their baby girl Ava Rose Hendy still born. It’s been an honour to be able to help these charities continue their work and we will continue to support them.
“We’re feeling overwhelmed at the support we have received from customers and friends and family of the salon. We will continue to support our amazing charities – Pregnancy Crisis Care and Ava’s fund.
Skin Deep won a highly commended award for their impressive fund-raising achievements which was presented to Nicola and Kathryn Kaye. Finalists came from across the whole of the UK.
Nicola added:
“It was an emotional event listening to why and what salons across the UK have done to help within their communities. I am so proud to be a part of the hair and beauty industry and to have received this award for my salon team’s efforts.
“The community keeps small businesses like ours successful and to be able to give back is something the whole team takes pride in.
“It was a nice bonus for us to be welcomed into the Houses of Parliament to sip Pimms and enjoy afternoon tea over looking the Thames from the Terrace.”
