Pollenize, a Plymouth-based environmental initiative, is thrilled to announce the successful fundraising and launch of the Chaddlewood Bioboost Project.
This collaborative effort, supported by Plymouth City Council and local Green Party councilors Lauren McLay and Ian Poyser, aims to improve biodiversity and public engagement with nature in the Chaddlewood area.

The project has already surpassed its initial goals, raising £8,643 from 35 supporters in just 28 days by March 11th, 2024. Thanks to the ongoing generosity of the community, and local business Nurture Group, Pollenize is continuing to accept donations to fund additional bioblitz events and seed packets for local schools. Plymouth City Council has also provided a significant contribution of £2,600, demonstrating their commitment to projects that improve the city’s environment.

“This project is a fantastic example of how collaboration can create positive change. By bringing back small patches of wildflowers, we’re not only creating beautiful green spaces but also providing vital habitats for pollinators that have seen a dramatic decline.”
The importance of this initiative is stark. Since the 1930s, a staggering 98% of wildflower meadows in the UK have disappeared, severely impacting pollinator numbers and overall biodiversity.

The Chaddlewood Bioboost Project is taking action. By mid-March, the Pollenize team had already prepared the ground and sown wildflower seeds at four designated locations in the area. Signage has been installed to educate the public about the project and encourage participation in citizen science initiatives.
“We’re excited to see the meadows flourish and provide a platform for the community to engage with nature through bioblitz surveys,”
says Finnie. Bioblitzes are events where residents, schools and local community groups can come together to identify as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period.

Social media has been abuzz with positive comments from Chaddlewood residents excited by the initiative and the speed of which Pollenize got to work establishing the meadows. This project builds upon the success of the ‘Chaddlewood Subways Project,’ which brightened subways with environmentally friendly messages by local artist Mrs Murals, fostering a safer and more welcoming environment.
