Tamar View Community Centre on the Barne Barton estate at St Budeaux has just celebrated the first anniversary of providing monthly coffee mornings for adults with special needs.

A monthly  email is sent to a number of Plymouth organisations which cater for day service and residents with special needs giving details of the event.  On the first Tuesday of every month the Centre has welcomed a growing number of people who enjoy coffee or tea; bacon or egg rolls at a nominal charge and either a game of bingo or disco.  They also enjoy buying objects from the bric a brac table from just 50p each.

In August the Centre had a BBQ which was enjoyed by over 30 people, some with their support workers

Pat Patel, manager at Tamar View Community Centre, said:

“We have been running a very popular and well attended monthly evening Mencap disco at Tamar View for over 20 years and decided a year ago to start a monthly coffee morning to give adults with special needs a social event away from their usual daytime activity or residential home.

“Feedback from regular attendees shows they enjoy the opportunity to go somewhere different for a couple of hours in a friendly atmosphere, ” he added. “The next coffee morning is on Tuesday September 4 from 10.30am until noon and all adults with special needs are very welcome with support workers if appropriate”.
