Nine works from Plymouth’s collection will be displayed in the Prime Minister’s official residence in partnership with the Government Art Collection, placing the city’s artistic heritage in front of world leaders and visiting dignitaries (P10). The announcement comes as Plymouth prepares its bid for UK City of Culture 2029.
Culture continues in the city centre with the launch of a new live events programme at the recently completed Amphitheatre (P10). From April to September, monthly performances will bring touring acts, genre-led showcases and emerging local musicians into the heart of Plymouth. The programme is designed to strengthen the city’s evening economy and animate public space across the summer.
Supporting that ambition, Councillor Matt Smith has been appointed as Plymouth’s Cabinet champion for the night time economy (P5). The new role will help shape a Night Time Economy Strategy, aligning hospitality, leisure, arts and transport as the city centre prepares for thousands of new homes and further investment linked to defence growth.

Community action also features prominently. The Dare 2 Ladies – a group of seven breast cancer thrivers – have raised nearly £6,000 at their latest fundraising ball, taking their overall total to almost £41,000 for The Primrose Foundation at Derriford Hospital (P2). Their fundraising has helped provide practical support for patients, including a quiet room and specialist services.
In Hyde Park, a well-established gallery has entered a new chapter, relaunching as Peirson and Peirson Contemporary. To mark the rebrand and its 20th anniversary at the location, the gallery has announced a national art prize, inviting submissions from artists across the UK for a summer exhibition in Plymouth (P6).
Elsewhere, Children’s Hospice South West has reopened its Mutley Plain charity shop following a full refurbishment, creating a redesigned retail space to support fundraising for children and families across the region. Nearby, local housebuilders have pledged support for Mutley cadets, backing youth development and training opportunities in the community.
The edition also includes the latest Councillor’s Column with St Peter and Waterfront Ward Councillors Chris Penberthy, Alison Raynsford and Lewis Allison, offering updates on local priorities and projects across Plymouth (P15).
