Plymstock Oaks RFC hosted a landmark evening for girls’ rugby as the Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy arrived at the Plymouth club.
The event welcomed 85 girls from across Plymouth and the surrounding areas, who took part in a fun non-contact rugby session celebrating participation, teamwork and the joy of the sport.
The club’s pitch was filled with energy as players of all ages and experience levels joined skills sessions, games and activities led by the club’s coaching team.
The arrival of the Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy added a special moment to the evening, giving young players the opportunity to see up close one of the most recognisable prizes in international rugby.
For many of the girls attending, it was their first time seeing the trophy that represents the pinnacle of women’s rugby, with players and families gathering for photos beside the famous prize.
The visit formed part of the national Community Rugby Trophy Tour, an initiative designed to inspire more girls to take up the sport and highlight the continued growth of women’s rugby at grassroots level.
Conor Thomson, head girls coach at Plymstock Oaks RFC, said the event showed the strength and enthusiasm for girls’ rugby in the region.
He said:
“This event was all about inspiring the next generation. Seeing so many girls enjoying themselves and embracing the sport is exactly what community rugby is about.
We’re incredibly proud to have hosted the trophy and to support the growth of girls’ rugby in our area.”
The club also thanked volunteers who helped organise the evening, as well as England Rugby for bringing the trophy to Plymouth as part of the nationwide tour.
Plymstock Oaks RFC says it will continue expanding its girls’ rugby programme and welcomes new players interested in joining the club.
